КОСЫ / SPITS

 Two spits, three countries, four sides

Curonian and Vistula spits, 98 and 65 kilometers long pieces of land shooting out into the Baltic sea, are shared between three countries and both include a state border. While the Lithuanian-Russian border requires visa, the Polish-Russian border is closed, which creates artificially isolated territories in reality belonging to the same environment. Spits include natural reserves with forests and sand-dunes, as well as the sea and bay shores throughout the totality of their length. The natural landscape gives the unique background to the human produced objects emphasizing more than ever the difference in their qualities by separating them from their habitual context. The difference in the geometry of the created by nature and the produced by men is complemented by their chromatic rupture. In these relatively little populated territory the human paradigm do not win over that of nature but stays projected on it.
